PAUCARTAMBO TRES CRUCES
Paucartambo is located in the Quechua climate zone at 2800 masl. It is east of the city of Cusco, in the Vilcanota Range. The exact translation of the word Paucartambo from Quechua is: Paucar= Inca and Tambo= Lodge. During Inca times, it was a population center, and many travelers passed through on their way to different parts of the Inca Empire. ( Tawantinsuyo). There was a thriving trade between products of the high jungle, like coca leaves, and Andean high mountain products, like jerky.)
CULTURAL-ARCHITECTURAL - HUATOCTO - VIRGEN DEL CARMEN - ACCANACUY - TRES CRUCES ARQUITECTURE
Paucartambo is a small town characterized by its colonial Spanish construction dating from the reign of King Carlos III in the 16th century. It is a living manifestation of the Conquest. The most notable work is the Carlos III bridge which crosses over the river in town. But the whole town has quite a bit of colonial construction. It is also possible to see the native Indian women all dressed up in their native costumes. Even the Quechua men and children where clothes typical of the by-gone era. Most streets are narrow, and most of the tourist activity is concentrated within a 3 block radius of the central plaza. The views are spectacular. The palm trees dance in the breeze. The whole scene brings upon the visitor a sense spiritual identification and cosmic connection.
The ACCANACUY Fiesta is traditionly celebrated every year in the highlands The great snow-capped mountain that you see from town is called ApuCahuacñahui. Offerings are made to this Apu and to the Sun and to Tayta Inti. It is a great time of the year, and the festival retains most of its pre-columbian flavor.
APU CAHUACÑAHUI MOUNTAIN
This sacred mountain is the point of the principle connection between the Andes mountain range and the lowland tropical Amazon jungle. It is also the point of connection between the sky and mother earth, called Pachamama. The traditional ancient beverage of choice in the Andes is called chicha. It is a lightly fermented corn drink that is always offered to Pachamama first. There is nothing casual about the fact the Incas were always interested in seeking cosmic and spiritual connections. In our zodiacal calendar, the sign changes around the 21st of each month, and that is the sign we are in until the 20th of the following month. The winter solstice, June 21st in the Andes, marks the time of year when the Sun is the farthest from the Earth. It is the greatest feast in the Inca calendar. On that day all the people give thanks to Tayta Inti (Father Sun). It is a great mystic ceremony of gratitude. For thousands of years, the descendants of the Incas, like the Q´eros and the Huallas have been calling in magnetic vibrations from the heavens, and giving thanks to to our father star for all his blessings. On the winter solstice the ceremony starts at 4:00am. The man in charge is called the CuracAcullaq. He performs the Hay Way or the Alcanze by first calling upon the mountains gods, who are called the Apus. These are the intermediaries between the heavens and the Earth. Then the ceremony thanking Father Sun takes place at sunrise.
VIRGEN DEL CARMEN ( VIRGIN OF CARMEN) :
There are various diverse theories about the origin of the Feast of Our Lady of Carmen. It is told that, back in the 17th century, 2 images of Our Lady of Carmen were sent over from Spain. One to Paucartambo in Cusco; the other to thr town of Paucarqolla in the department of Puno. It so happened that, of the two statues, one was more beautiful than the other. The more beautiful one was brought to Paucartambo. This upset the people of Puno. They complained and tried to get the statues switched, but without result. To this day, people from Puno make the long journey to Paucartambo to dance and sing for the Virgin there. Another version of the story says that a grand image of Our Lady was brought to the Assumption Hacienda in the Kosñipata valley. It was very big and beautiful, and was carved out of wood. Every year on the Feast Day of Corpus Christi, it was carried by the Indians all the way to Paucartambo. It was very heavy and one year the natives rebelled. They burned the hacienda, killed the whites, and threw the image of Our Lady into the Serpent River ( Amaru Mayu ). It floated down the river, but was soon rescued, and brought back to the church at Paucartambo. There is a dance performed every year at the feast called the dance of the chunchos which has an amazing choreography.
NINAMARCA : CHULLPAS OR BURIAL MOUNDS FROM THE LUPACA CULTURE
The lupaca Empire The Wari created the first known empire in the Andes. The capital was also called Wari. In contradistinction to the Chavin Culture, the Wari diffusion was not solely limited to religious and artictic influence. The Wari were military conquerers. They built and maintained important military posts throughout Peru. A few surviving examples are: Piquillacta near Cuzco, Cajamarquila near Lima, and Wilkawain near Huaráz. The Wari subjugated the cultures which they conquered, and made them follow their own ways. The Wari empire lasted from 700ad. until 1100ad. You can find Wari influence in the art, technology, and architecture throughout Peru. When they conquered a culture, they did away with the former traditions of that people. But in the end, they were defeated and their empire disappeared.
