PROGRAM MANU CULTURAL - CUSCO - PILCOPATA – MACHIS – CUSCO

*First Day : CUSCO - PILCOPATA 600 msnm –HUACARIA 650msnm
We leave from Cusco at 6:00 am in a prívate bus for the 7 hour journey to the Province of Paucartambo-Pilcopata. We’ll pass through the Pisac district and travel along the Vilcanota River. Then we’ll ascend to the Colquepata Pass which is located at an altitude of 4000masl. Then we’ll descend into the Paucartambo Province and travel along the banks of the Quencomayo River until we reach the town of Paucartambo. From there we’ll travel along the Mapacho River (2850 masl.) and climb the Ajcanaco Pass to 3900 masl. A slight detour takes us to 3 Cruces (3 Crosses) where the view out over the Amazon rain forest is spectacular.( It’s also a great place to start a descent by bicycle.) We’ll head down into the cloud forest, passing by the towns of San Pedro (1800 masl.) Chonta Chaca ,Patria, and finally Pilcopata. When we arrive at Huacaria we will camp for the night and eat a fine supper. We can visit with the people of the Huachipairis and Machis tribes who live in the high jungle. *SECOND DAY : MACHIGUENGAS HUACARIA TRIBE – PÌÑI PIÑI RIVER AMALIA (CAMPING)
At 8:00am, after breakfast we’ll start hiking through the forest of the Machi territory. During the 4 hour hike, we’ll pass through valleys where we can see parrots, monkeys, anteaters and maybe spectacled bears. There will be tons of birdlife and very interesting tropical flora. We’ll eat lunch when we reach the Piñipiñi River. We will camp there too. We can observe the folks living on the river. And going fishing with them using arrows and spears. We’ll try to catch sungaros ,boca chicos ,sábalo , and other fish. Altitude: Piñi piñi River 800 masl. / Camping “Amalia “800m masl..
* THIRD DAY : PIÑI PIÑI RIVER AMALIA –PUERTO ATALAYA -CUSCO
Early the next morning, at 5:00am, we’ll take a 2 hour hike through the woods, to a blind by the salt lick ( which also contains other minerals.) This is where many animals and birds congregate at dawn. Parrots, tapirs, sajinos, etc. We’ll have breakfast at 10:00am and then ride down the river on native raft constructed of balsa logs. The banks of the PIÑI PIÑI are covered with interesting flora and fauna. We’ll join up with the Alta Madre de Dios River after a couple hours. We’ll stop at the town of Atalaya, which is 600masl. That is where we’ll have lunch and then catch the bus back to Cusco. Distance: Amalia (camping)to Aalaya Puerto :20 klm(balsa ) Atalaya –PILCOPATA :18klm
*FOURTH DAY : (dia opcional)VISIT TO THE MACHU PICCHU ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE
from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo. There we will switch to a bus that will arrive in Cusco at 8:00pm We wake up early, have breakfast, and at 5:00am catch the bus up to Machu Picchu. It’s a 15 minute ride. Early in the morning we can climb up Mt. Huayna Picchu and then take a guided tour of each section of the archeological site. Late in the afternoon we will catch the 5:00pm train. .

* $50 for the balsa raft constructed by the Machis
* $20 for the synthetic sleeping bag for the 4 days.
* $30 if you would like to sleep in a single tent rather than a doublé tent.
